About University Of Madras
The University of Madras, established in 1857 alongside the universities of Mumbai and Calcutta, has been a cornerstone of higher education and research for over 154 years. In 2008, the university celebrated its sesquicentennial (150 years) with former President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam as the Chief Guest. In 2000, the University of Madras was first accredited by the NAAC, earning a "5 Star Status." It was re-accredited in 2007 and 2014, receiving an "A grade," and again in 2023 with an "A++ grade". Additionally, the University of Madras holds the special designation of “University with Potential for Excellence,” receiving special assistance from the UGC.
The University of Madras has spawned numerous new universities not only in Tamil Nadu but also in neighboring states such as Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, earning it the title of “Mother University” of Southern India. According to recent QS rankings, the University of Madras joined the elite group with a rank of 541-550, placing it among the top 15 institutions in India within the top 600 globally. Among the 504 universities in India, the University of Madras stands 5th in terms of research publications and other academic achievements. Since its inception in 1857, the University of Madras has been continuously striving to enhance its excellence.
